When Dr. Harry Bhandari first landed in the United States years ago, he shared the classic immigrant dream: working hard, building a future, and contributing to his new community. Today, that journey stands as a beacon of resilience and historic achievement for the global Nepali diaspora.

In the U.S. State Legislative elections, Dr. Bhandari—representing the Democratic Party—secured an emphatic third consecutive victory in Maryland’s District 8, reinforcing his role as a prominent Nepali-American political trailblazer.

Flipping a 12-Year Republican Stronghold

Dr. Bhandari’s political trajectory first made national and international headlines in 2018. Campaigning in Maryland’s District 8, he accomplished what political analysts considered a formidable challenge: capturing a legislative seat that had been held by the Republican Party for 12 consecutive years.

With that victory, Dr. Bhandari officially became the first person of Nepali origin to be elected as a state lawmaker (Delegate) in the history of the United States.

A Mandate Built on Community Trust

Following his historic debut, Bhandari maintained high constituent engagement, earning a reputation for accessible governance, education policy advocacy, and community outreach. In subsequent elections, he consistently secured high voter turnouts and substantial margins of victory.

Expressing his gratitude following the vote count, Dr. Bhandari credited the victory to the enduring trust of the residents of Maryland:

“This election outcome is a testament to the collective faith of the residents of District 8 and Maryland as a whole,” Dr. Bhandari stated. “I am deeply humbled by the opportunity to continue serving our state and advocating for inclusive policy, equal opportunity, and public welfare.”

Inspiration for the Global Diaspora

Dr. Bhandari’s third-term election highlights the growing civic integration and political representation of South Asian immigrants within American governance.

For the expanding Nepali diaspora across North America and Europe, his legislative tenure demonstrates that immigrant communities can actively shape public policy, serve local constituents, and attain high-level public office in their adopted nations.
