Grand Deepawali in Nepal: NEA Prepares for 1,700 MW Peak Demand with 2,500 MW Hydro Generation
Nepal has entered the height of Tihar, Nepal Sambat, and Chhath festivities, transforming cities and villages into a luminous spectacle of oil lamps (diyo), decorative colorful rangolis, and elaborate electric light displays.
To support the massive surge in electricity consumption during Laxmi Puja—the evening dedicated to worshiping the Goddess of Wealth—the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has rolled out nationwide operational measures to guarantee uninterrupted power supply.
Demand Projections vs. Domestic Hydro Generation
According to technical load forecasts released by the NEA, maximum national power demand is expected to peak at approximately 1,700 Megawatts (MW) on Laxmi Puja evening.
- Sufficient Domestic Supply: Total domestic hydroelectric power generation during this festive window is projected at 2,500 MW.
- Zero Supply Deficit: Because domestic generation comfortably exceeds anticipated peak loads by over 800 MW, the NEA expects a seamless grid management experience without reliance on emergency load shedding or heavy imports.
High-Level Directives and 24/7 Grid Monitoring
Following executive directives issued by Energy Minister Biraj Bhakta Shrestha to NEA Executive Director Dirghayu Kumar Shrestha and senior grid managers, emergency protocols have been activated across transmission and distribution networks:
- Round-the-Clock Rapid Response Teams: Technical crews have been posted on 24-hour standby across all municipal and provincial distribution centers to address localized transformer overloads or line trips instantly.
- Enhanced No-Light Complaint Desk: Hotline operators have been instructed to maintain immediate response standards for consumer calls regarding localized outages.
- Public Safety Guidelines: The authority has issued safety advisories urging citizens to inspect decorative wiring and avoid overloading single sockets to prevent electrical fires during festive illuminations.
With robust generation surpluses and active grid surveillance, the nation is set to celebrate a grand, brilliantly illuminated Deepawali without power disruptions.
